JOWAI: A youth who was brought in a critical condition to Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital in Jowai with a stab injury in the stomach nearly lost his life due to alleged negligence of the hospital staff.

Sources informed that on August 2, the youth Rijied Sumer of Iooksi (Priang) village was rushed to Priang PHC, Iooksi after he was stabbed by one Monjur Lyngdoh.

Later, he was referred to Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, commonly known as KJPA or Mission Hospital, in Jowai. Doctors in the hospital discharged him on August 5 after treatment claiming that the victim was then normal. However, as Sumer continued to complain of unease, the family members admitted him to Nazareth Hospital, Shillong.

After thorough examination, doctors in Nazareth found that the victim’s intestine was badly affected due to unhygienic operation carried out at the previous hospital.

The doctors at Nazareth had to re-operate the youth who is still undergoing treatment.

The patient’s elder brother, Becareful Sumer slammed the authorities of Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital for the alleged negligence.

“Patients are supposed to feel safe in the hospital but the equation seems to be the opposite in Dr Norman Tunnel Hospital where people would now feel threatened instead,” the brother of the victim said.
