Businessman, son granted bail

SHILLONG: A Single Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday granted bail to city businessman Paul Leong and his son Kimfa Marbaniang who had been arrested on charges of assaulting five KHADC enforcement staff on July 25 while they were checking trading licenses of non-tribal traders at Iewduh.

A lawyer, on the request of anonymity, informed that the Justice S.R. Sen granted bail to the father-son duo on the ground that a false report had been submitted by the Investigation Officer (IO) in the CJM Court on the matter.

The report of the IO stated that KHADC staff Teilang Lyngdoh, who had suffered grave injuries, was still undergoing treatment, but the court learnt that the person was discharged from the Hospital on August 1.

Taking strong exception to the false report, the Court directed the DGP and the SP to ensure that Investigating Officers do not prepare and submit false reports.

The bail petition was moved by advocate Kastav Paul and assistant public prosecutor N. Shylla.
