SHILLONG: A Lok Adalat organized by the Office of the District & Session Judge, Ri Bhoi District, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority at Nongpoh on Friday disposed 148 cases out of a total of 164 cases.
Four court rooms were set up for the convenience of the litigants at the Lok Adalat.
District & Session Judge, Ri Bhoi, M.B. Challam, informed that Lok Adalat was a public court which required no pleaders but conciliators and no legal procedures as in the court rooms but was a more friendly way of solving disputes.
Only simple offence cases and motor accident claims not complicated or criminal cases could be disposed in a Lok Adalat, she said, adding, a case once settled in a public court is deemed final.
The main objective of the public court was to decrease the backlog of pending cases in the court of law and to help the public, particularly the economically weaker sections, to save valuable time and money.
B. Khriam, Chief Judicial Magistrate and G.M. Pariat, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Ri Bhoi district offered the welcome address and vote of thanks respectively.
