SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Football Association (Women Cell) is elated over the selection of two girls from the State for a month-long trial-cum-coaching camp of the U-16 Indian national women’s football team to be held at the SAI Centre in Gujarat.
Pynhun Shullet (striker) from Saphai Village West Jaintia Hills and Iawanlang Nongbet (midfielder) from Perkseh Village East Khasi Hills created history when they became the first women footballers from the State to be spotted by the AIFF for such a camp. Both of them are currently training with the Royal Wahingdoh Football Club’s women’s team.
The girls, who were selected on the basis of their performance in last year’s Subroto Cup in New Delhi, will depart from Shillong on Sunday.
Expressing its happiness over the development, the MFA also lauded the efforts of women’s coach Iaiakyntiew Nongkynrih who according to the Association has infused the spirit of football among the girls in the State.
“The selection of the two girls will further improve and attract others to take the sport seriously,” MFA vice president Diverland Lyngdoh said in a statement issued here on Friday.
