GSU Phulbari unit adds new twist in Chibinang lynching case

TURA: Contradicting the claims of villagers as well as the police the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Phulbari Regional Unit, has said that the Chibinang lynch victim, late Marwin M Sangma, and three others who were attacked by a mob were innocent villagers and not linked to any militant group.

It may be reminded that on August 27 one Md. Jahanudin Ali of Chibinang village was abducted by unidentified armed militants, following which an infuriated mob fell on Marwin Sangma and three others who happened to be in the area suspecting them to be members of a group of kidnappers.

In the attack Marwin Sangma lost his life while Sattajith Rabha, Nipen Rabha and Krebirth Marak were grievously injured.

According to the GSU, Marwin belonged to Renigre under Durangre Village and was the son of Banon A Sangma of Chibinang under Phulbari PS in West Garo Hills. He was said to be actively associated with the A’chik People’s Social Development Organization (APSDO).

Similarly, Sattajith Rabha who is a student of Class IX of Shyamnagar Higher Secondary School belonged to Kaimbatapara Village and was coming back home after tuitions when he was attacked by the mob who suspected him to be one of the kidnappers.

While the movements of the other two – Nipen Rabha and Krebith Marak – on the day of the incident was not mentioned by the GSU, it claimed that all four of them were innocent and had nothing to do with the kidnapping episode.

Stating that great injustice has been committed leading to loss of an innocent life, the Union along with other NGOs of the region have demanded compensation to the tune of Rs.10 lakh to the next of kin of Marwin M Sangma, Rs.5 lakh to critically injured Sattajith Rabha and Rs.2 lakh each to Nipen Rabha and Krebirth Marak who were also injured in the incident.

The Union also demanded that charges against the three who are currently undergoing treatment be dropped and action be taken against those responsible for the death of Marwin Sangma.
