TURA: While the rest of Garo Hills was celebrating Teachers’ Day in a glittering manner, yet, for a group of students of Tura Government College the day was one to lament.
For as many as a 100 plus students from the Commerce wing of the oldest college in Garo Hills teachers are a rare commodity.
The students of the Bachelor of Commerce department (B.Com I and B.Com II) have reportedly been doing without a teacher to take their classes for Business Economics and Fundamental Mathematics for several years now.
“There have been no regular lecturers for these two subjects for several years. We as students have to make do on our own gathering documents, preparing notes for the examinations without any guidance. It is very challenging for all of us,” lamented Chwibirth K Marak, a student of the College, while speaking with The Shillong Times on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Friday.
His other colleagues reveal that classes for the two subjects were taken for only three days in the previous year which itself was made possible by the arrival of a temporary lecturer from one of the other departments.
According to the students, the onus of holding classes for the two subjects lies with the Economic and Mathematics department of the college. However, lack of adequate teachers has often been cited as the reason for the problem with most lecturers having their hands full with their respective departments.
The affected students are demanding equal learning facilities as that of their counterparts from other departments of the institution. “After all we are also paying the same admission and examination fees like the rest of the students in the college,” Marak stated.
