Tea trader killed, two injured in blast

Tezpur (Assam): A tea trader was killed and two others including a tea garden manger were injured in a grenade blast by suspected NDFB(S) terrorists at Dalgaon area in Darrang district, police said on Sunday. The grenade was thrown last night at the Borgarah tea garden manager’s office, in which the manager Rakesh Kureshia and assistant manager Ramakant Tiwari were injured. “A tea trader Kamal Chand Jain, who was present in the office at that time, died on the way to Guwahati,” a police officer said. As per witnesses, four persons on two motorcycles entered the garden from the northern side and threw the grenade at the manager’s office, where the three persons were sitting. “Militants of the Songbijit faction of NDFB are believed to be behind the incident,” the police officer said. Further investigation is on to nab the culprits. (PTI)

IIT-Guwahati student commits suicide

Guwahati: A first semester student of IIT-Guwahati on Sunday committed suicide allegedly by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel in the campus here. He has been identified as Tushar Yadav, hailing from Gurgaon in Haryana, and was a student of Electronics Communication and Engineering department at Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati, police said. “The student took the extreme step in the wee hours today (Sunday). He left a suicide note addressed to his parents. It mainly stated that he was suffering from depression for the last two months and today was its end,” a police officer said. Yadav was a resident at the Kameng hostel and he jumped from the it’s fourth floor. The body has been sent for post-mortem and the family has been informed about the incident, police said. (PTI)

Border peace rally held

Kohima: A peace rally along the Nagaland-Assam border area expressed resentment over resettlement of Adivasi people in Wokha district of Nagaland. The rally was organised by tribal oprganisations of the area under the aegis of Ralan Area Lotha Hoho (RALH) in Tongtongo Lanrhyu, Old Ralan Saturday to draw the attention of all state and civil stakeholders to the resettlement of Adivasi people in the Assam-Nagaland border. The resettlement of illegal settlers comes in the aftermath of the Assam-Nagaland border row. The rally was also organized to press for immediate withdrawal of all Assam police post at the B-C sector of the border under Ralan area within 48-hours. Insisting immediate flush out of Maoists, who are allegedly operating or taking shelter under the banner of the so-called All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), the Naga organization demanded deployment of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) or Indian Reserve Battalion in displaced Lotha Naga villages like Wochan, Tchuujanphen, S Wochan and Yanlum. “The border issue is not an individual issue of Lothas but it is an issue of whole Nagas”, said Central Naga Tribal Council (CNTC) President H Yeptho, while lamenting that the state government has not done anything even after eight agreements that has been signed between Nagaland and Assam since 1972. Man held for forcing women into flesh trade

Chennai: A 38-year-old man was on Sunday arrested here for allegedly forcing women into prostitution after promising them jobs in his massage parlour. Police said Anand, owner of a massage parlour here, was arrested and four women, hailing from Manipur and Sikkim, were rescued. He promised them jobs in massage spas but forced them into the flesh trade, a city police release here said, adding, he has been remanded to judicial custody. The rescued women have been sent to a government rehabilitation home. (PTI)

CRPF personnel to be deployed at the NIT complex in Manipur

Imphal: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel would be deployed “immediately” at the complex of National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Langol area in Manipur’s Imphal West district following an altercation between two sections of students. “The state government has decided to deploy CRPF personnel at the institute immediately both as a confidence building measure for the students from outside Manipur as also to strictly maintain law and order within the campus”, a government order said here today. The decision was taken after an altercation between students from the outside the state and local students of NIT on September 12. “In case of any reports of ragging, physical violence, fights, intimidation etc, the authorities of NIT Manipur must immediately take strict and prompt punitive action against the responsible students including rustication from the institute, black-listing from joining any other institution in the country or even filing of FIR in any concerned police station”, the order said. The Director NIT was also told to submit daily reports to the state government on the atmosphere prevailing in the campus for the next one week. Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Education Minister M Okendro personally visited the institute and discussed the matter with the NIT authorities Saturday. (PTI)

Nagaland BJP welcomes interim stay order of Gauhati HC

Kohima: Nagaland state unit of BJP has welcomed the verdict of the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court for the interim stay order on disqualification of three MLAs on Friday. In a press release, Nagaland BJP state unit President Dr. M. Chuba Ao said the Court’s interim order has virtually ‘sanctified’ the decision of the three MLAs, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr. T. M. Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon, who joined the BJP for the progress of Nagaland. While welcoming the ‘re-entry’ of the three MLAs into the BJP fold, Dr. Ao hoped this was the beginning of forging Nagaland politics and development with the mainstream politics. BJP state unit also thanked national BJP party President Amit Shah for deputing Supreme Court senior advocate Satyapal Jain to represent the three MLAs as their Counsel and for sending Nagaland in-charge Tapir Gao to Nagaland to witness the hearings of the High Court, on behalf of the party.
