SHILLONG: Springing a surprise, MDCs belonging to KHNAM, a partner in the Ardent Basaiawmoit-led Executive Committee, reportedly met Congress leaders on Monday night to have an alternate Executive Committee, fearing that UDP may forge an alliance with the Congress in the KHADC.

According to reports, the KHNAM MDCs met the Congress leaders at the same time when the meeting of the UDP Central Executive Committee (CEC) was going on to discuss the political crisis in the Council.

Sources revealed that KHNAM initiated the move with the anticipation that the UDP might withdraw from the All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) to work with the Congress.

It is not clear whether HSPDP is also aware of the move by KHNAM MDCs.

When contacted, senior Congress MDCs, on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Tuesday that they had held a meeting with KHNAM MDCs.

“The two parties have decided to meet again in the next few days to discuss the possibilities of forming an alliance in the Council,” senior Congress MDCs added.

However, KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum has denied that the party MDCs met the Congress leaders on Monday night.

“These are only rumours just to create confusion in the minds of the people to show that KHNAM is power hungry. Let me make it very clear that we are committed to remain with ARPA till the end of the term,” Nongrum said.
