New Delhi: Teams from the North-East had a fruitful day at the 55th Subroto Cup Football Tournament as Mizoram’s defending champions Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Birjhora Higher Secondary School of Assam and Nagaland’s Greenwood High School qualified for the quarter-finals of the Under-14 event at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday.
The Birjhora schoolboys advanced to the knockouts after topping Pool D by beating Bethany Convent High School, Salcete, 3-0. Raja Brahma, Narayan and Ahmorendra scored for the winning team.
In Pool C, Ramhlunchhunga’s brace helped the Mizoram school beat Nepal’s Lok Smriti Higher Secondary School and earned an entry into the last eight.
In Pool B, Nagaland’s Greenwood High School pumped in 32 goals past a hapless Government Senior Secondary School, Lakshadweep, with striker Kito, Imlong and Maraiwibo scoring six times and Temsu (2), Tokayi (4), Solomon (3), Vikethzo (1) and Nigathu (3) and an own-goal rounding off the scoring list.
