5 militants arrested in Assam

Guwahati: Five militants, four of NDFB-S and one of Raha National Liberation Army (RNLA), were arrested by a joint team of Army and police in Assam’s Udalguri district, police said on Tuesday. “The four National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Songbijit and RNLA extremists were nabbed from Murabari village in Harisinga police station during a joint operation last night,” IGP L R Bishnoi told PTI. “A factory-made revolver, two rounds of AK-47 live ammunition, a khukri (knife), Rs 36,500 in cash, four mobile handsets, 9 SIM cards and four mobile memory cards were recovered from them,” he said. The ultras were engaged in extortion in Kalaigaon, Harisinga and Khairabari areas of Udalguri as well as Goreswar area of neighbouring Baksa district, Bishnoi said. The NDFB men have been identified as Ringsar Daimary, Babul Rabha, Bisan Daimary and Jisoya Khaklary, while the RNLA extremist is Paneswar Rabha. (PTI)

Mizoram minister visits Myanmar to inspect rice import route

Aizawl: Mizoram’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister John Rotluangliana on Tuesday visited Tiddim in Myanmar from Zokhawthar border trade centre by road to inspect the route for import of rice from the neighbouring country. Rotluangliana was accompanied by Parliamentary Secretary T T Zothansanga and senior officials, an official statement said. Mizoram has decided to import rice from Myanmar in view of shortage of foodstuff supply due to construction work for gauge conversion of the Lumding-Badarpur sector railway from October 1, an official said. The rice would be imported via Zokhawthar village from where it would be distributed to different districts, he added. (PTI)

Nagaland CM urges HUDCO for a Mega Smart City in state

Kohima: The chairman and managing director (CMD), HUDCO, New Delhi M. Ravi Kanth met with the Chief Minister of Nagaland T. R. Zeliang and discussed various issues, including business generation and development of the State. According to a press release, Kanth highlighted various schemes and programmes which can be funded by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO) and also discussed CSR programme of HUDCO. Zeliang expressed interest, the release said, especially for revenue generation projects and also informed that Mega Smart City (MSC) project either in Dimapur or Kohima would be taken up shortly, for which, he sought HUDCO partnership in funding the projects. M. Ravi Kanth is on a visit to North East states, which will be conclude on Tuesday. The release informed that HUDCO has already granted assistance to Health & Family Welfare Department for Construction of Short Home Stay for HIV patients at Kohima, and for purchase of Cesspool Vehicles for Kohima and Dimapur Municipal Councils. The HUDCO CMD also met Nagaland Governor P. B. Acharya on Monday evening. (UNI)

One injured in Imphal blast

Imphal: A man was injured when an IED exploded at Hatta Makha Leikai, Imphal East on Monday night. Md Azad Khan (32), who was injured in the blast, was rushed to a nearby hospital and was out of danger. Police suspected that the bomb could have been planted in a garbage site. Due to the impact of the blast junks which were piled up in the garbage got scattered. United Hatta Golapati Development Council has condemned the incident and stated that the injured was offering dinner to friends for Id ul Zuha when the blast occurred. (UNI)

Nagaland Zoo observes wildlife week

Kohima: As the Nagaland Zoological Park at Rangapahar near Dimapur celebrated Wildlife Week 2014 under the theme ‘Compassion for Wildlife’ from Tuesday. According to a release issued by Officer-in-charge of Nagaland Zoological Park Obed Bohovi Swu, the zoo authority has made the entry to the zoo free for all visitors on the day. There will be an exhibition in the zoo for wildlife conservation awareness to mark the celebration. Director, Nagaland Zoological Park, Sentichuba Aier, while conveying warm regards to all the people of the State, especially those directly or indirectly involved in conservation of wildlife, called upon everyone to have compassion for wildlife. He has also invited individuals, families, schools, colleges, organizations, offices and all wildlife lovers to visit the zoo on the occasion and be part of the celebration. (UNI)

Nagaland students selected for study in Pune

Kohima: A sending off-cum-orientation programme of trainees selected under skill entrepreneurship training, a joint initiative of HP Institute, Maharashtra, and Nagaland Development Outreach, the development wing of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) was held at NMM conference hall, Fellowship Colony in Dimapur on Sunday. According to a release on Tuesday altogether two hundred and twenty two Naga youths, both boys and girls, belonging to various church associations affiliated to NBCC have been selected to undergo 6-month training in travel, tourism and hospitality, electrical and electronic and automobiles sectors at HP Institute at Pune on Maharashtra. Along with HP Institute and NDO, the Nagaland Department of Employment & Craftsmanship Training, Government of Nagaland, is also sponsoring the training. Additional director, Employment & Craftsmanship Training, Vandan Lotha, in his address exhorted the trainees to be obedient and deligent during the training period. He said though Nagas are known for their hospitality, yet they are lacking in showing respect and courtesy, which are essential attributes in the hospitality industry. Vandan also said Naga youths should give up the dependency mentality and try to earn their own livelihood by venturing into private sectors where job opportunities abound. ‘If you are willing to work, then you can always find work. But if you are not willing to work, then you will not find any work. Only you can create or generate work,’ the additional director said. (UNI)

NSCN-K cadre nabbed by troops

Imphal: Troops of 12 BIHAR and 10 Assam Rifles nabbed a NSCN(K) cadre here on Tuesday. Assam Rifles official said a joint operation was launched at Chinghulong which led to the arrest of Army No-15251, SS 2nd Lt (Batch No 2005), Kalingong Pammei. One 9mm Pistol alongwith magazine was recovered from his possession. He was handed over to Patsoi Police Station. (UNI)
