Prez directive to State govt

SHILLONG: President Pranab Mukherjee has asked Meghalaya government to provide all possible help to the flood-affected people of the State.

In a letter to Governor KK Paul on Tuesday, the President said that he was deeply saddened to learn about the heavy rains leading to floods and landslides in certain areas of Meghalaya which caused loss of lives, injuries and damage to property.

“I call upon the state government and other authorities to provide all possible aide to the bereaved families, who have lost their near and dear ones as well as medical assistance to the injured”, President said.

Mukherjee has also sent condolences to the families of the deceased and wished speedy recovery of the injured.

Fifty nine people died in flash flood and landslide triggered by cloud burst in Meghalaya, the state government said on Tuesday.

“The number of deaths due to flash floods and landslides is 59 while five persons are still missing,” Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister RC Laloo said.

“We have almost completed compiling our assessment of the damages,” he said.
