Indians bag three medals on Day 3 at Para Asian Games
Incheon: India added three more medals on the third day of competitions with swimmer Sharath Mahadevarao Gayakwad grabbing his third medal in the Para Asian Games here on Tuesday. Narender bagged a silver in men’s javelin throw – F42/44 event before Karamjyoti added a bronze in women’s discus throw – F55/56 at the Incheon Main Asiad Stadium. At the swimming pool, Gayakwad grabbed a bronze – his third medal in Incheon Para Asian Games – in men’s 100m breaststroke SB8. Gayakwad had won a silver in 200m individual medley SM 8 on Sunday before bagging a bronze in 100m butterfly S8 on Monday. With the two medals today, India have now won 15 medals (2 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze) to occupy the 13th spot in the medal table. China continued their supremacy with 179 medals while Korea (97) and Japan (81) were on second and third spot respectively in the Games competed among differently-abled sportspersons. On Monday, India had won two gold, one silver and three bronze after bagging six medals on the opening day on Sunday. (PTI)
Advani loses opening World Billiards game
Leeds: In a not-so-good start to his World Billiards Championship campaign, Indian ace Pankaj Advani lost his opening game against defending champion Peter Gilchrist but later made up with two straight wins, here. Former champion Advani lost his way after winning the first two frames to go down 2-3 against the Singaporean ace in an interesting battle. India’s poster boy of cue sports Advani, who has captured the title in the short and long format and has a total of eight billiards crowns under his belt, then ouplayed Adian Murray and Brain Harvey with a 3-0 scoreline respectively. Former Asian Billiards champion Alok Kumar won all his matches 3-0. Ahmedabad cueist Dhvaj Haria also won all his matches, loosing only a frame. All Indians in the fray cruised along with easy wins in the league stages and are half way through to qualifying for the last-32. (PTI)
Victorious U-21 hockey team returns to rousing welcome
New Delhi: The Indian Under-21 hockey team returned home to a rousing welcome here after clinching the Sultan of Johor Cup with the upbeat players terming the victory as a stepping stone for bigger challenges ahead. The players were received at the IGI airport by their family, friends, officials and hockey lovers late Monday night. They defeated Great Britain 2-1 in the final on October 19 at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Captain Harjeet Singh was named ‘Most Promising Player of the Tournament’ while drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh bagged the ‘Top Scorer of the Tournament’ and ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards. (PTI)
