2-day KHADC session begins today

SHILLONG: In what is expected to be a stormy two-day session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council beginning Tuesday, the Congress-led opposition alliance (KHUDA-II) is expected to raise the issue of failure of the Executive Committee (EC) to notify the election of the Deputy Chairman of the Council.

The post of the Deputy Chairman fell vacant after Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the HSPDP quit on October 15.

“The Executive Committee should have notified the election of the Deputy Chairman ahead of the session. We are surprised that this was not done,” KHUDA-II Chairman and Congress MDC Pynshngain Syiem said on Monday.

Syiem also informed that the opposition would raise the issue of failure of the EC to have a clear cut policy on preservation of indigenous culture and traditions as mandated in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

“The ruling coalition (ARPA) is busy settling their internal disputes rather than focusing on these two core issues,” Syiem said.

The opposition leader further added that they would move a motion to seek clarification from KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum on the visit of the KHADC MDCs to Sabuda under Raid Nongtung along the inter-State border with Assam.

Syiem lamented that the border visit had turned out to a one-off case which shows the lack of concern of the ruling coalition towards the problems faced by the villagers residing along the border.

The opposition is also likely to rake up the issue of seven appointments in the Council despite the claims of financial crunch by the ruling side.
