SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education, R.C. Laloo on Monday said that the State Government will examine the demand for introduction of Science and Commerce streams in Sohra Govt. College.
“We will examine the feasibility of the demand for introduction of Science and Commerce streams,” he said after meeting a delegation of KSU South Khasi Hills District (SKHD) Unit on Monday.
Pointing out that Sohra Govt. College was among the few government colleges in the State, Laloo said that being the Education Minister it was his job to see that such colleges are developed to their full potential.
Earlier, the KSU unit submitted a memorandum to Laloo demanding introduction of the Science and Commerce streams in the College.

“We are of the opinion that introduction of these two new streams will cater to the interests of the students from Sohra,” KSU SKHD president M. Bynnud said after their meeting with the Minister.
He also informed that they have placed a demand for construction of an additional building in the College.
“The Union has also demanded introduction of a college bus since most of the students hail from remote places. Provision of a bus from the Government would enable the students to reach the College on time,” Bynnud said.
It may be mentioned that the College began as a private college in 1982 and was taken over by the State Government in 2009.
Meanwhile, the JSU has expressed it gratefulness to the State Government for its assurance of sanctioning a B.Ed College at Kiang Nangbah College in 2015.
“We are happy with the assurance of the State Government,” JSU president R. Parein stated after their meeting with the Education Minister on Monday.
According to Parien, the Education Minister has assured that the Government will make provisions for additional classrooms in Kiang Nangbah College.
Laloo also assured that the Government will soon appoint full-fledged Principal and Vice Principal in the Jowai Govt. Boy’s Secondary School.
