SHILLONG: Self-styled chairman of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA), Chiindik Marak, who recently jumped bail to reunite with his outfit, has in a statement refuted police claims that he had absconded with a large sum of GNLA funds before joining UALA.
“I have never taken away GNLA’s hidden funds. If I had done that I would not have been arrested as it was financial instability that resulted in my arrest on May 14, 2014 at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station,” he claimed, adding that it was the police who were trying to malign his image which was an age-old practice by the department.
He further went on to claim that the recent arrest of two of his family members, Selbith and Barnius, was against the law as both of them were innocent and were not involved in any illegal activity and not even members of the outfit.
Contradicting the claims of the police, he alleged that no demand notes or other incriminating articles were recovered from them and said, “We have lost total faith in the Government for its multiple failure in dealing with innocent civilians as if they were criminals.”
He claimed that the UALA was formed to raise its voice against people with vested interest for rights and equality mentioned in the Constitution of India.
“The voice of the poor people is unheard and always kept suppressed which is why we rose up in armed struggle. We decided to put an end to further bloodshed by offering to come in for peace talks but the government seems to be busy filling its own pockets,” he said.
