SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Secretary P.B.O. Warjri on Tuesday stressed on the need for greater compassion and love to be shown to persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Addressing a one-day workshop on sensitization of rights and entitlements of persons with disabilities at Yojana Bhawan here, the Chief Secretary urged all sections of society to come together and realize the need for special assistance for the PWDs.
The workshop focused on ending discrimination against the persons with various disabilities.
Warjri observed that in this era where there is so much of advancement of technology, humans need to give more efforts to extend help towards the physically-challenged people.
He also emphasized on the need for recognizing the act provided for the physically-challenged people and offer them with equal rights which every individual has the right to enjoy in this country.
Warjri noted that the State Government was providing the PWDs with all assistance and is even building ramps in various offices and designating ambulances for them.
“The government has a positive obligation for bringing a change for the physically-challenged people,” he added.
There are over 44317 physically challenged people in the State which is 1.4 per cent of the total population, said Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, C. Kharkongor, and added that there was a need to include sign language in the school curriculum as a subject.
