TURA: Police have recovered the body of a middle-aged planter who was abducted by armed men at gunpoint a week ago in East Garo Hills district.

The body of Ropson T Sangma, a plantation owner, was recovered on Wednesday evening from Rongpachu jungle, six days after he was kidnapped from his plantation at Rongapgre where he was residing with his wife.

The body bore gunshot wounds, police informed.

Ropson was temporarily staying with his wife in the plantation when armed men came and took him away on November 6.

He had earlier shifted out of his permanent residence at Rongjeng Waja following a previous attempt by unknown persons to forcibly enter his premises.

Worried over the incident he moved to his plantation where he kept guard with a government licensed shotgun.

That failed to deter the attackers who managed to sneak in and whisk him away.

It is believed that the attackers may have earlier demanded money from the victim who refused to pay up forcing the killers to target him.

Police did not rule out the involvement of two Garo militant groups, Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) and A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA). Both groups are said to be active in the area.
