Man gets 25-month jail in assault case
Thane:A 24-year-old man was on Thursday convicted and sentenced to 25-month imprisonment by a local court for assaulting a labourer in Bhiwandi here in 2012. In addition to the jail term, Thane Additional Sessions Judge M C Khadke also fined accused Pintu alias Eizaz Shakir Ansari (24) with Rs 2000 for the offence punishable under section 326 of the IPC. Additional Public Prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh told the court that Pintu and victim Roshan Asrafali Shaikh (27) were residents of Gayatri Nagar. The accused used to pass lewd comments on Roshan’s wife which annoyed him. Despite repeated warnings to Pintu, he continued with the behaviour, the court was told. On September 24, 2012 the accused reportedly asked one of their common friends Soyal to call out Roshan from his home in the night. The evidence of the victim and his wife proved to be important in the case in addition to the testimony of the doctors who treated him. (PTI)
Malad murder: Killer arrested from Kolkata
Mumbai:Two days after a 32-year-old homemaker was murdered in suburban Malad here, Mumbai police on Thursday arrested the alleged killer from Kolkata as he was preparing to crossover to neighbouring Bangladesh. Accused Arvind Gupta was apprehended at Howrah in Kolkata, a crime branch officer said. “Possessing gold jewellery robbed from the deceased woman’s residence here, Gupta was preparing to sneak into Bangladesh,” the officer told PTI. Shagufta Khan, the wife of a bookie, who had been arrested in a betting case some years ago, was found murdered on Tuesday afternoon at her residence in Rustomjee apartments at Marve Road in suburban Malad, police said. “As his female friend is from Bangladesh, he wanted to go there, may be to settle there permanently. He murdered Khan to rob her house so that he can have money to reach Bangladesh,” the officer said, adding, the accused was being brought to Mumbai from Kolkata. (PTI)
Newspaper office vandalised, one held
Nagpur:The office of a vernacular daily was ransacked here allegedly by a group of 20-25 people, police said on Thursday. One person has been arrested and four others detained in this connection, they said. The attackers stormed into the newspaper’s office last night protesting against a report published in it which they claimed hurt their religious sentiments, they said. They allegedly vandalised the office property and computers, damaged some vehicles in the parking area and misbehaved with women journalists, police said. Offences have been registered against the rioters under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 144 (unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon), 147 (rioting), 148 149, 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) 353 (a) (2), 395 (dacoity), 307 (attempt to murder), 332 add 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC, a police release said here. 36-year-old woman raped after spiking sedatives in ‘prasad’
Faridabad:A 36-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her neighbour after rendering her unconscious by giving her sedative laced ‘prasad’ at his residence here, police said on Thursday. According to the police, the accused Kuldeep Sethi built a temple in his house where women often offered prayers. The victim yesterday went to his residence to offer morning prayers when Sethi spiked sedatives in her ‘prasad’ and later raped her, police said. A case has been registered, they said adding that the matter is under investigation. Meanwhile, in another incident, a 25-year-old married woman was allegedly raped by a man for the last 10 months and threatened to kill her children if she leaked the crime here, police said. Police have registered a case in the incident and are investigating the matter. (PTI)
Man killed by neighbour
Kanpur:A 35-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by his neighbour when he asked the accused to return him the borrowed money, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday in Naubasta area, when the victim Bharat Tiwari, was called by neighbour, Ajit Agnihotri, to his house for returning fifty thousand rupees he had borrowed from Tiwari for his mother’s illness, police said. Tiwari, who was a receptionist at a coaching centre, had been asking Agnihotri, who works as a security guard, to return the amount, which had led to heated arguments between them in the past. The victim was rushed to nearby hospital by his family where he was declared dead, police said, adding the body has been sent for postmortem. The accused is absconding and police teams have been consitituted to trace him, they said. (PTI)
