Softball coaching camp

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Softball Association will be conducting a Softball coaching camp 2014 in 6 places, Shillong, Jowai, Umsning, Nongstoin, Mawkyrwat, and khliehriat with the motive to popularize this Game and also to select players for the coming Senior National Game to be held in the month of January at Nagpur. The Association invites all the Sports Club, interested players to attend this coaching camp to learn this new game. Interested player kindly register yourself or contact the numbers below. Excited to be in Roger Federer’s team: Sania

Mumbai: Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza on Wednesday said she is excited to be part of same team as Swiss veteran Roger Federer in the upcoming International Premier Tennis League (IPTL). “I am really excited. It is great for tennis in India and Asia. I am really excited to play in same team as Roger Federer,” she told. The IPTL features four franchise teams, including India featuring players like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Pete Sampras among others. Mirza and Federer are part of the Delhi franchise Indian Aces. The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer, picked up a back injury in the ATP finals and Mirza hoped he regains his fitness soon. “I hope he recovers. He is playing at the Davis Cup at the moment. Hopefully, it’s not so bad. Looking forward to playing with him,” the Hyderabadi said. (PTI)

Boxers Pinki, Monica lose at Worlds

Jeju: Indian boxers Pinki Rani and Monica Saun lost in the preliminary round matches of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s World Championships here Wednesday. While the Asian Games bronze medallist Pinki lost 1-2 in a split decision to Russia’s Saiana Sagataeva in the 51kg category, Monica (75kg) lost 0-3 to Chinese Li Qian in a unanimous judges’ decision. In the match between Pinki and Saiana, the first judge awarded 39-37 in favour of the Russian. The second judge awarded each boxer 28 points but the third judge favoured Saiana 40-36. In the other bout, Monica was awarded 36 points by all the judges. (IANS)

Finch, Smith spearhead Aussies to big win over South Africa

Canberra: Australia cruised to a 73-run victory over South Africa in their third one-day international on Wednesday on the back of big-hitting innings by Aaron Finch and Steve Smith. Opener Finch cracked 109 off 127 balls and Smith hit a swashbuckling unbeaten 73 off 55 balls as Australia amassed a formidable 329 for five off their 50 overs in Canberra. The Proteas were always up against it and were dismissed for 256 in the 45th over, with last man Imran Tahir unable to bat because of a knee he injured while fielding. The Australians now lead the five-match series 2-1 ahead of the final games in Melbourne on Friday and Sydney on Sunday. (PTI)

England to play warm-up matches with Germany, France

London: England will play friendly games against Germany and France in the build-up to Euro 2016, the Football Association (FA) announced Wednesday. The France game is scheduled to take place at Wembley Nov 17 next year, while Germany will visit England in March 2016, reports Xinhua. England had already confirmed games against Italy in March, 2015 and a game against Ireland in Dublin June 7. (IANS)
