1 Cong supporter dies of cardiac arrest during Tripura bandh

Agartala:An activist of the opposition Congress on Thursday died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a bandh procession called by the party in the state at Damcherra in North Tripura district. SP, Police Control, Uttam Kumar Bhowmick said Kameswar Sinha (59), who participated in the procession to support the 12-hour bandh called by the Congress, suddenly fell down and was immediately taken to Damcherra rural hospital where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival. Damcherra is about 230 km from Agartala. The bandh, which was called to protest against the alleged police atrocities, evoked mixed response. Shops and business establishments remained closed in the state and vehicles were off the streets except in Gandacherra sub-division of Dhalai district. Though offices and banks were open, attendance was thin. As many as 1,600 picketers were arrested from different parts of the state and were later on released, IG, Police Control, Nepal Das said. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere, he added.(PTI)

Manipuri student assaulted for confronting eve-teasers

Bengaluru:A Manipuri youth was allegedly assaulted by three unidentified drunk men when he tried to rescue a girl whom they were harassing in Kothanur area here. The incident happened when the three men passed lewd comments on the girl and the youth who was passing by confronted them for their misbehaviour on Wednesday night, police said. As the trio persisted with their misbehaviour, the 21-year-old youth, an undergraduate student at a city college, warned them against it, following which they allegedly assaulted him, police said. . Police said the culprits would be nabbed soon.In another incident involving a person from N-East, a Manipuri student leader was beaten up last month by three men for not speaking in Kannada.(PTI)

4 women injured in buffalo attack near Manas National Park

Barpeta:Four women were seriously injured by a herd of wild buffaloes at a Tea Estate near Manas National Park in Assam’s Barpeta district on Thursday. The women had gone to collect firewood from Fatemabad Tea Estate adjacent to Bahbari Range of the Park when they came in front of the herd coming from opposite side, police said.The four identified as Sukhmati Baraik, Hiteswari Sutradhar, Damayanti Sutradhar and Dhaniya Pradhan were taken to Barpeta Medical College Hospital and their condition was stated to be critical, police said. Rhino killed by poachers in Kaziranga

Kaziranga:The bullet-riddled carcass of a rhino was found from Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Thursday. “Patrolling forest guards heard gunshots around 3 AM on Thursday near Teteliguri camp in Kohora range and launched a search operation in the area,” Kaziranga Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) S K Seal Sharma said. They rushed to the area from where the gunshots were heard, following which an encounter with the poachers took place. The poachers fled and could not saw off the rhino’s horn, he said. The rhino carcass was later found with three bullet wounds, he said, adding, several empty cartridges of the .303 rifle were also found. Search operations were continuing in the area to nab the poachers, the official added. This is the 24th rhino killed by poachers during the current year and the third case when the poachers could not take away the horn.(PTI)

State level painting competition on Energy Conservation

Guwahati:The State level painting competition on Energy Conservation organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India was held at Guwahati on 15th November 2014 at Shilpgram, Guwahati. The painting competition was organized in Assam by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. 50 participants from each group i.e. Group A (4th, 5th & 6th standard) and Group B (7th, 8th & 9th standards) participated in the event. First, second and third prizes in group A was won by Subhangi Sinha, Mintu Gogoi and Dolly kalita and in group B was won by Emon Chetia Phukan, Kautilya Darshan Barua and Udipta Kalita respectively. The winners of first, second and third prizes in Group A will get chance to participate in the National level painting competition to be held at New Delhi on 12th December 2014. However paintings of winners of 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes of Group B at State level will be evaluated at National level and prizes will be distributed on the National Energy Conservation Day to be celebrated on 14th December 2014. The State level painting competition was held from 8.30AM at Shilpgram where total 95 students from different schools of Assam took part and prize distribution ceremony was held at the evening at Shilpgram auditorium where Shri Pradyut Bordoloi, Minister Power, Industries, Commerce & Education along with some other dignitaries distributed the prizes to the winners. This year total 10,03,382 students from 29,009 schools in Assam participated in the competition in the school level. Out of these, 50 participants selected from Group A & 50 participants selected from Group B to take part in State level painting competition held at Guwahati.
