Shillong: As part of the 16-day campaign for Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Department of Counselling Psychology and the Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University, organized an awareness programme in Jowai along with a screening of a short documentary, in collaboration with the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the District Social Welfare Officer recently.
Speaking on the occasion, district police chief, H.G. Lyngdoh, highlighted the issue of rising crimes against women and added that the police were doing their best to bring justice to the survivors of such violent crimes.
“The police are giving their hundred per cent to catch these culprits and provide justice for the survivors but all this becomes very difficult when those survivors don’t come forward and report the crime,” he added.
Extra Assistant Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills, R. Kharbihkhiew, gave a brief speech on the various Acts and Laws for Protection of Women against Domestic Violence in the Indian Constitution and added that these laws were enough to ensure secure and safe lives for victims of such crimes.
He further suggested that efforts have to be made to create platforms to sensitize the people more effectively to address the rising crimes and violence against women and girls.
District Social Welfare Officer, Z.J. Lyngdoh, informed about the various organizations and Departments in the State working for the welfare of the people especially women.
