Transport officials caught napping over Shillong-Dhaka bus service

SHILLONG: With Assam suddenly coming into the picture, Meghalaya is likely to lose the credit of carrying out trial run for the Shillong-Dhaka bus service on December 8 due to the lackadaisical attitude of senior officials of the Transport department.

Sources on Monday revealed that the Transport department had done all the ground work including preparing of the concept paper since 2008, but the Assam Government was trying to take away the credit.

According to sources, Assam was not even in the picture when the joint inspection comprising of senior government officials of the Customs department, Police, BSF and MTC was held in Dawki in 2013.

Sources said that the Assam Government has taken steps to start the trial run of the bus service following the directive of Vijay Chibber, Secretary, Ministry of Road, Transport and Highway during the North East Connectivity Summit held in Guwahati on November 28.

“It is pretty sad that the State Government is giving an opportunity to Assam to carry out the trial run despite the neighbouring state not being in the picture right from the stage when the project was first conceptualized,” sources said.

Sources also questioned how the State Government was allowing Assam to conduct the trial run when a maximum of the journey would be through Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, sources also revealed that Assam Government has managed to take over the show due to lackadaisical attitude of the senior officials of the Transport department.
