Editor,
In total contradiction to what CM Mukul Sangma has recently stated publicly, our politicians and policemen have shown complete disregard to public opinion published in newspapers. If that had not been the case, something would have been done to solve the Parking Problem at Laitumkhrah by now. The entire citizenry has suffered due to the lackadaisical attitude of the Govt with regard to this issue. The market area has become a dead zone which nobody visits till late evening due to parking restrictions everywhere. The police are happy to collect (extort) fines from the public knowing that people have been given no choice at all. Through these columns, appeals have been made by several individuals to the Chief Minister, the Urban Affairs Minister, the DGP and the SP to provide a solution but to no avail. The CM and his men do not follow what he preaches publicly it seems! Else they would have taken the media seriously and done something about such complaints!

Investigate NGos and crooked politicians
Editor,
Apropos the letter “KSU responsible for state’s backwardness” by B. Suchiang (Dec 1, 2014) I find myself in agreement with the overall assessment of the writer. There are several points which make a strong case for investigation by central intelligence agencies. Not least are the undeniable links between KSU and HNLC, between GSU and GNLA, etc. which are fostered by rogue politicians. These issues are taboo for Meghalaya Police. MLAs and ministers are known to throw a fit whenever high-profile pressure group leaders are arrested. This makes it impossible for local police to do their job. The issue of funds of questionable origin flowing freely to these groups cannot be ruled out. Foreign powers have been fishing in the troubled waters of the north-eastern states for decades by funding and strategically utilizing pressure groups to stir up trouble. This fact has been established by army and intelligence agencies. But they are handicapped by the uncooperative attitude of state governments who will neither take action on their own nor take the help of central forces in solving the militancy issue. Politicians take refuge behind “talks” and “surrenders” which, if we look at the history of this troubled region, have only created larger, more complex and longer-lasting problems for society. The Govt-ANVC accord is poised to go down the same beaten path with predictable outcomes, in terms of social disharmony and undermining of the justice system. The accord-signing Government is about to do the same with HNLC, an unnecessary ploy which has left everyone scratching their heads in bewilderment. The festering sore is simply not given a chance to heal by a nexus of politicians, pressure groups, militants and a compromised police force. We really need CBI and NIA to get into the act before its too late.

Clarification
Editor,
Kindly refer to the news item which appeared on the third page of your 4th December edition regarding ‘Traffic regulations for Smokie concert ‘. The parking lot referred to opposite the CRPF camp is NOT under MUDA but belongs to and is managed by the Shillong Recreation Ground Trust. We would be grateful if this clarification could be given in your edition of the 5th December 2014.
