CM gives assurance to modernize the dist, beautification of Nongkhnum
NONGSTOIN: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma has promised to sanction deficit posts for the teaching and non teaching staff of Nongstoin College as per UGC norms.
Dr. Mukul Sangma was speaking on the sideline of the inauguration of Nongstoin College Girl’s hostel on Saturday last.
As per the memorandum submitted by the Principal of the College B.K.Laitphlang, it mention that Nongstoin College is the only recognized institution of higher learning in the District Headquarters which also caters the educational needs of the students community, both urban and rural areas in the districts.
The institute registers a commendable annual enrollment of more than 1600 students which consists of a large number of students from rural agricultural background.
It was also mentioned that the College has a total of 10 departments with a solitary sanctioned post each, in only 6 of those departments. With five non teaching staff and one Library Assistant, in which the total number of Teaching and non teaching staff including the principal comes to only thirteen sanctioned under Deficit grant in aid, where this number falls short of the UGC requirements of at least 4 faculty members in each department and five in English and Khasi.
The memorandum also mention that in addition to twenty six full time teaching staff under college sanction posts, the college Governing body has to struggle against overwhelming odds to raise funds to meet the demand.
The memorandum also urged the Chief minister to accord sanction of 51 (fifty one) teaching and non teaching staff to start science and commerce stream in the institution.
Related to the memorandum submitted by the College, the Chief Minister lauded the approach taken by the leaders of the area in respect of management of the college and urged upon the Deputy Commissioner, S. Kharlyngdoh, who is also the Chairman of the governing body to prepare a new proposal for the development of the college saying that the government would consider their proposal this financial year itself.
The Chief Minister also informed that it is the commitment of the government to have a science and commerce courses in all district capitals and since the people of Nongstoin wants the institution to be within the management and control of the people themselves, the first sanction for Science stream under Deficit system should go to Nongstoin College, he announced.
Beside the development of Nongstoin College, the Chief Minister called upon the Deputy Commissioner to call a meeting to plan further beautification and modernization of Nongstoin town saying that Nongstoin-Nongkhnum is one of the target areas of the government for investment in developing the area as a tourist destination.
Dr.Mukul Sangma also urged the local MLA to be in tough with the public in bringing Nongstoin clean and green for tourism destination.
He also promised that the government will also take an immediate step to improve the road from Nongstoin to Maweit and Nongstoin to Nongkhnum.
