IMR remains at 35 in Mizoram

Aizawl:While India has witnessed a steady decline in infant mortality rate, it has neither decreased or increased in Mizoram. According to health officials here, the national average of IMR has declined to 38 from last year’s 40, it remains at 35 in Mizoram. Health officials attributed this to lack of public awareness, among others. Mizoram was divided into 40 units, including 20 rural units and 20 urban units, to conduct the census for IMR. The census covered 14,000 people in rural areas and 19,000 in urban areas, they said. According to state programme officer for reproductive & child health Dr R Lalthanga, early marriage is another big factor behind the prevalence of infant deaths. IMR is said to be higher in southern districts of Mizoram compared to other districts, which according to health officials, was due to lack of political and administrative support. Mizoram had registered 35 cases of infant death in every 1000 newborns during 2013-2014, which was higher IMRs recorded during 2011 -2012 and 2012-2013, which were 29 and 28 respectively. (PTI)
