Expert panel to prepare digital profile of State flora

Shillong: The Meghalaya Biodiversity Board is contemplating to declare the Sacred Grove at Mawphlang as the first Biodiversity heritage site in the State and also to prepare People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBR) to document local biodiversity.

The issue was discussed during the second meeting of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board held recently. The Board was constituted in 2010 to spearhead conservation initiatives in the State and to implement the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

Under the Biodiversity Board, 87 Biodiversity Management Committees have been constituted and Technical Support Groups have been notified in each of the 11 districts of the State to help and guide the Biodiversity Board and the management committees.

Six State-level expert committees have also been constituted on various aspects of conservation.

The Government also formed a team of expert to create a digital profile of the flora of the State.

The meeting also decided to undertake awareness campaigns in all the districts and to conduct a State-level photography competition on Biodiversity.
