East Khasi Hills police website launched

SHILLONG: In a bid to make its functioning more transparent and enable citizens to get quick access to necessary information, the East Khasi Hills police launched its Shillong Police website at a function held at the conference hall, Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

The website, www.shillongpolice.gov.in was launched by DGP PJP Hanaman in the presence of senior police officers and representatives from the various local Dorbar Shnong including eminent personalities of the city.

Hanaman said that the launch of this website is a way forward to make the functioning of the police more transparent. However he stated that the objectives for launching this website should be clear to the police themselves and that a two way information flow is facilitated.

Giving the example of the Montreal riots, Hanaman said the Canadian Police were able to arrest several criminals from pictures captured by individuals on mobile phones and posted on the Police website. “This is real time policing,” the DGP said, adding that information gathering is one thing but intelligence helps police be more pro-active.

“The website needs to be up to date and user friendly and serve as a vehicle for interacting with the community. The public should be able to have quick access to necessary information about the East Khasi Hills police by going to the website,” the DGP said adding that this would attract media persons to browse the website over and over again.

Earlier while welcoming the guests, Superintendent East Khasi Hills, M Kharkrang said, “The website is our way of reaching out to you to let you know about us and to know your concerns, get your feedback and seek your help so as to serve you better.” He urged the public to write and engage with the Police vide the email ID – [email protected]

Kharkrang said that through the website the district police would give important advisories from time to time so that people crimes are prevented. He informed that the project is part of the Safe-Secure- Shillong project and urged the members of the public to become stakeholders in providing meaningful content to enrich the website.

Meanwhile, ICARE president Toki Blah observed that the present era is witnessing rapid changes in the entire spectrum of human activities and the launching of the website will definitely open a new chapter in the relationship between the police and public.

Blah however asserted that comprehensive and resolute efforts are required on the part of the police to carry out the herculean task of combating crime, maintenance of law and order, peace and tranquility in the society and to generate safe and secure environment.

NIC State Informatics Officer Timothy Dkhar informed that they had planned to come up with the website about five years back but had not been able to come up with the website due to some technical problems. “I am happy that we have finally been able to come up with this website which is long overdue,” Dkhar stated.

IG (Operations) GHP Raju said that he hope the website would also improve the response time of the Police. “It is my experience that 108 is the best benchmark for police to improve their response time since 98% of times the phone is picked up on the first ring and 99% on the second ring. Will police be able to do the same? We should make a commitment to ourselves to improve our response time,” Raju said.

He also informed that the CCTV cameras would be set up in 6 locations by Christmas this year and in 28 other locations by January next year. This is Phase I of the Safe-Secure-Shillong project.

Others who spoke included Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal and SP City, Vivek Syiem who gave an overview of the contents of the website.
