New Delhi: Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya, Wansuk Syiem, on Tuesday expressed her anguish over continued violent attacks on people from the North East living in the national capital territory region and demanded for special laws to deal with such racial attacks.
Raising the matter in the Rajya Sabha through a Special Mention, Wansuk said that such racial attacks are not defined in any specific law resulting in police helplessness in combating the hate crime.
Giving one specific example she said that in the most infamous Nido Tania case the trial court dropped charges under the SC/ ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act since the investigating agency CBI had not produced his ST certificate.
“I urge the Centre to wake up to the stark realities of such targeted attacks that have now assumed a definite pattern of intolerance,” Wansuk said.
She also demanded that the Centre should take stern measures to instill a sense of belonging and safety among the people from the region.
The MP also urged the Centre to implement the Bezbaruah Committee report on this sensitive issue.
