Senior horticulture officer commits suicide

Rajahmundry (AP):A 47-year-old senior officer with horticulture department here allegedly committed suicide at his residence, police said on Sunday. Guruzada Srinivasa Rao, working as senior assistant director with East Godavari’s Rajahmundry Horticulture department, hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his AV Appa Rao colony residence here last night, Deputy Superintendent of Police K Muralikrishna, Prakasha Nagar police station, said. Rao, reportedly the great-grand son of noted Telugu writer Gurazada Appa Rao, had recently been transferred to Kakinada. When his wife performed puja in the new house at Kakinada, she rang up Rao several times. However, after getting no response, she called up the neighbours to check. When the neighbours knocked his door, they also got no response and subsequently, they looked through a window in his apartment and found Rao hanging, he said. They immediately rang up the police who broke open the door and shifted the body to Rajahmundry Government Hospital. (PTI)

ASI, constable killed in accident

New Delhi:An Assistant sub-inspector and a constable of the Delhi police were on Sunday killed while another was seriously injured when a speeding car hit the barricades they were manning in Kalindi Kunj area of south-east Delhi in the wee hours. “The speeding car rammed into the barricade and dragged the police personnel to some distance,” said a police official. The deceased have been identified as ASI Nagendra and constable Prahlad. Constable Kaptan who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital is stated to be critical. Police officials said the driver of the Maruti EECO van identified as Hemant, a resident of Ghaziabad, was highly inebriated when the incident took place. He has been arrested from the spot and an FIR has been registered against him under relevant sections of the IPC. “The bodies have been sent to AIIMS for postmortem,” said a police official.(PTI)

3 injured as truck collides with train

Raipur:Three persons, including a loco pilot, were injured when a truck collided with a passenger train at an unmanned railway crossing on Sunday in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district. The mishap occurred around 8 AM at Senchua village under Kurud police station limits, when the truck, which was crossing an unmanned level-crossing, was hit by Dhamtari- Raipur passenger train enroute Raipur on the South East Central Railway section, Kurud Station House Officer M K Hota told PTI. The train’s assistant locomotive pilot, truck driver and helper were injured in the collision, Hota said. As per preliminary investigation, the truck was heading towards Kurud after unloading goods at Senchua. The truck driver probably failed to see the train due to low visibility from fog in the morning and as a result the vehicle collided with the train at the crossing, the SHO said. From the impact of the collision the truck was dragged into a field adjacent to the railway track, he said. After getting news of the accident, villagers called up police and 108 emergency ambulance service. (PTI)

Seven persons killed, 30 injured in road accident

Jaipur:Seven persons were killed and at least 30 others injured when the tractor-trolley carrying them overturned near Desuri-ki-Naal on the border of Pali and Rajsamand districts, police said on Sunday. Over 45 people were travelling in the tractor-trolley last evening while returning from pilgrimage at Bhairon-Ka-Mandir located in Rajsamand when the driver lost control over the steering, they said. The deceased, all belonging to Bhil community, have been identified as Ganesh Singh, Bhanwarlal, Banshilal, Champalal, Dinesh, Hanja, and Meera, police said. Fourteen of the injured were admitted to Desuri hospital in Pali district while remaining were shifted to two hospitals at Charbhuja and Rajsamand, they said. (PTI)

Cop’s widow and four children paid compensation of Rs 30 lakh

Thane: A widow and her four children of a police officer who served the Thane District Rural Police were paid a compensation of Rs 30 lakh by the National Lok Adalat here on Saturday. The compensation was given to Sugandha Balkrishna Shinde (54), Santosh (19), Sunita (17), Meena (15) and Vinayak (14). Adalat panel members A H Gajyani, Kishore Soundattikar and C V Deshpande directed Ramesh Ekanth Waman, owner of the vehicle involved in the accident and United India Ansurance Company make the payment within four weeks. The deceased police officer Balkrishna Gangaram Shinde (51) served as an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Thane District Rural Police attached to the Bhiwandi taluka police station, and resided at Police Lines.(PTI)
