SHILLONG: The notification of the Meghalaya Board of School Education making Khasi (MIL) an elective subject has literally turned into a controversy with many stakeholders demanding immediate scrapping of the order. However, MBOSE has its own reason for issuing the notification.

The executive chairman of Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) EP Kharbhih on Monday made it clear that the MBOSE cannot revoke its notification making Khasi (MIL) an elective subject.

The statement came from the MBOSE boss after the KHADC CEM Edelbert Nongrum and other stakeholders met him here on Monday and demanded immediate scrapping of the notification.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Kharbhih said that the notification was approved by the State Government and MBOSE cannot do anything and the matter has to be taken up with the State Government.

Stating that there is nothing detrimental in the notification, Kharbhih said that the MBOSE had taken the decision “for the welfare of students.”

He said that with this notification, students can go for four elective subjects whereas earlier students had the option of only three elective subjects even as he made it clear that MBOSE is not against any language.

Earlier, KHADC CEM Edelbert Nongrum urged that MBOSE to revoke the order.

To this MBOSE chief suggested the delegation to raise the matter during the meeting of the committee setup for inclusion of Khasi language in the 8th schedule later this month.
