Four policemen injured in mob attack in Bihar
Begusarai:Four policemen were injured when a mob pelted stones at them and ransacked Dandari police station in the district on a rumour about the reported death of an undertrial prisoner on Monday. Angry over a rumour about the reported death of their fellow villager and an undertrial prisoner Kishundev Sada, a large people of Meha Mohanpur village attacked the police station and pelted stones at the cops leaving four of them injured, Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar said. The local police officers’ plea that the ailing prisoner was alive and under treatment went in vain as the mob ransacked the police station and damaged furniture and other equipments, he said. The mob also fired 3-4 rounds in the air to intimidate the policemen who also retaliated forcing the mob to disperse, he said.The injured policemen, identified as Sub-Inspector (SI) Nityanand Sharma, ASIs Nandkumar Manjhi and Md Mujamil and driver Nandan Tiwary were taken to Balia Primary Health Centre, he said.(PTI)
Man murders friend after minor spat; tries to burn body
Raipur:A 41-year-old man allegedly murdered his friend following an argument over some minor issue in Balodabazar-Bhatapara district in Chhattisgarh and also tried to burn his body, police said on Monday. The incident took place outside the Congress party office in Bhatapara on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The accused Hanuman Tiwari was arrested for the murder of Pradeep Jain (40), they said. “Jain, who used to sell earthen pots, was murdered by Tiwari following an argument between them over some minor issue. The incident took place outside the Bhatapara Congress office under Bhatapara police station limits,” Station House Officer BR Gupta told PTI. As per preliminary investigation, the duo had consumed liquor in the courtyard of the Congress office at night when it was locked. Soon a scuffle broke out between them over some minor issue, which turned violent, he said. “Tiwari hit Jain on his head with bricks and wooden sticks, following which he died on the spot. (PTI)
4 Naxals held in Bastar division
Raipur: Four Naxals were on Monday arrested in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-hit Bastar division, police said. Two of them were arrested by a joint contingent of Border Security Force and police from Kanhargaon village forests under Bande police station limits in Kanker district, 250 km from Raipur, Superintendent of Police R N Dash told PTI. Shivaji, a member of platoon under Kasansure area committee of Naxals, and Arjun, a jan-militia commander, were keeping watch on the movement of security forces, Dash said, adding that two single-barrel muzzle-loading guns were recovered from their possession. Shivaji was carrying a reward of Rs 2,000 on his head. While Ayatu (27) and Laalu (21) were arrested from Purantarai village in Dantewada district. (PTI)
Man held at airport for smuggling gold worth Rs 24 lakh
New Delhi: A man has been arrested for allegedly smuggling into the country gold worth nearly Rs 24 lakh at the international airport here, the customs department on Monday said. The accused, who had arrived here from Dubai, was intercepted by customs officials on Saturday. “On detailed examination of his baggage and personal search, eight pieces of gold bars total weighing 933.12 gms were recovered,” a release issued on Monday by the customs said. The passenger was arrested and the gold bars were seized, it said. The total value of eight gold bars is assessed to be Rs 23.59 lakh, the release said. (PTI)
Police foil Naxal attack on cell phone tower in Telangana
Hyderabad:A group of Maoists fired at a police party in Khammam district of Telangana after security forces foiled their attempt to blast a cell phone tower, police said on Monday. The incident occurred last night around 11 PM when a group of around 40 people comprising Maoists and militia members were trying to blast a cell phone tower in Satyanarayanapuram in the district, a senior police officer said. “A police party confronted them after which the Maoists fired on the forces as police retaliated by firing in the air,” Additional Superintendent of Police Bhadrachalam (Sub-Division) N Prakash Reddy said. “We protected the cell phone tower. Following retaliation the Maoists fled away from the scene. No one was injured in the incident,” the ASP said, adding a hunt has been launched to nab the absconding ultras.Three weapons left behind by the fleeing Maoists were seized from the spot, he said.(PTI)
Drunk cop mows down 10-yr-old boy, injures woman
New Delhi: A 10-year-old boy was killed and his grandmother injured when they were hit by a car allegedly driven by a “drunk” Delhi Police constable in east Delhi’s this evening. According to the police, the incident took place in fish market in Mandawali area around 5.30 PM when the accused constable Ashok, who was on off-duty, was reversing his car when he hit Gopal and his grandmother. Police said Ashok, who was in an inebriated condition, had come to the market with two other men. “After the incident, both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Gopal was declared dead,” a senior police official said, adding that the condition of the boy’s grandmother is stated to be stable.(PTI)
Passengers hit as bus transport employees go on strike in TN
Chennai:Sunday travellers were badly hit across Tamil Nadu on Monday as a large number of state-owned transport corporation buses stayed off roads with employees affiliated to 11 trade unions commencing an indefinite strike pressing various demands including wage revision. Members of 11 trade unions, including, CITU, INTUC and DMK’s Labour Progressive Front, are participating in the strike, which caught the holiday commuters by surprise as it was advanced by a day. About 60 per cent of buses did not operate following the strike, causing immense hardship to travellers, police and trade union sources said. (PTI)
