Deliberation on HC ruling on traditional bodies

SHILLONG: The meeting convened by the UDP to discuss the recent ruling of the High Court of Meghalaya questioning the role of traditional heads in the State will be held on Saturday.

The meeting has been convened following widespread debate over what is being termed as a controversial High Court ruling which has also been opposed by the KHADC.

The UDP has invited the various traditional heads from both Khasi and Jaintia Hills region to attend the crucial meeting which will be held at Jaiaw Shyiap & Lum Pyllon Community Hall at 10.30 am.

Besides the traditional heads, the party has also invited the Chief Executive Members of both the KHADC and the JHADC to attend the meeting.

“We have convened this meeting since we are concerned over the ramifications this ruling of the High Court will have on the functioning of the various traditional bodies in the State,” UDP working president, Paul Lyngdoh said.

He also hoped that some positive suggestions will emerge during the deliberations in the meeting to check the imbalances prevailing in the functioning of the various traditional bodies.

It may be mentioned that the court had also directed the State government to end all types of ‘parallel government practices’ besides prohibiting the issuing of NOC by headmen.

KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum had slammed the High Court for the ruling which according to him would destabilize various traditional institutions of the State.

“The court cannot pass this kind of judgment only on the ground that the traditional bodies do not have their own written laws. The court cannot overlook the practice and convention which the traditional bodies have been following since time immemorial,” he had said.
