Redrafting of Village administration Bill

SHILLONG: The five-member sub-committee tasked with suggesting changes in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Village Administration) Bill, 2014 by the UDP and traditional heads met Council CEM Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday.Giving details of the meeting here on Thursday, UDP working president and convener of the sub-committee, Bindo Mathew Lanong said that the KHADC CEM has agreed “in principle” to look into the suggestion of the committee for redrafting of the bill.”In case the State Government approves the bill in the present form, an amendment can always be brought to rectify the various flaws in the current bill,” Lanong said adding that the committee wants the bill to be redrafted at the earliest.

The sub-committee will again meet on January 14 before submitting its suggestion on redrafting of the bill.The five-member sub-committee was formed during the recent meeting called by the UDP to deliberate on the High Court ruling on traditional heads. The meeting was also attended by over 100 traditional heads from Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Lanong said that the committee members also urged the KHADC CEM to formulate a legislation to empower the Rangbah Shnong and other traditional heads.
