Contempt of court hearing against KHADC chief

SHILLONG: In view of the upcoming contempt of court proceeding against KHADC chief  Adelbert Nongrum, scheduled to take place on January 27, the  East Khasi Hills administration has promulgated Section 144 CrPC prohibiting assembly of five or more persons within 500 metres radius of the Meghalaya High Court.
The official order, which came into force with immediate effect, also prohibits carrying of arms and any other lethal weapons or any other items/material “having the potential to be used as a weapon which is likely cause grievous injury of harm to any person or persons.”
The official notification issued on Thursday said that the district administration clamped the order after receiving information that a large number of Nongrum’s supporters including women would assemble on the court premises on the day of hearing, which might create a serious law and order problem.
Earlier, the KSU and HYC had decided to accompany the KHADC chief during the hearing.
It may be mentioned here that the High Court of Meghalaya recently registered a case against Nongrum for allegedly making derogatory and defamatory statement against a judge of the court.
Justice SR Sen directed the Registrar General of the Court to register a complaint against Nongrum for allegedly trying to lower the image of the Judiciary and throwing an open challenge to the Judiciary.
The High Court has decided to register the case on the basis of reports which appeared in a section of the local English dailies.
