New twist to mysterious death of police officer

SHILLONG: Giving a new twist to the controversy surrounding the death of the officer-in-charge of the Patharkhmah police outpost Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, the medical report of the Medical and Health Officer of Patharkhmah Community Health Centre (CHC) has revealed that the bullet had actually entered from the back of the head of the cop.
Marbaniang died under mysterious circumstances on the night of January 24.
According to the medical report, the entry wound on the back of the head was of the size of 1.5 centimeter approximately while the exit wound on the forehead was with the size of 2 centimeter approximately.
In the referral letter to a Guwhati-based private hospital — GNRC, the Medical and Health Officer stated that Pyngrope was found lying in pool of blood in his quarter at about 9 pm on January 24 with bullet injuries.
Marbaniang’s family, meanwhile, received two contradictory reports as far as the police official’s time of death is concerned.
The certificate handed over to the relatives from Nongpoh civil hospital stated that Marbaniang had expired on January 24 at 8.50 pm whereas the certificate issued by GNRC stated that Marbaniang passed away on January 25 at 3.12 am.
The incident happened soon after the police officer detained 32 trucks carrying coal illegally to Assam. This has fuelled strong suspicion that he might have been killed for detaining the trucks.
The relatives of Pyngrope had on Friday demanded an inquiry by an independent agency into the incident.
The relatives have made this demand in the FIR which they have filed at the Nongpoh PS on Friday.
“We would want an independent inquiry to be conducted either by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the incident,” Marbaniang’s widow, Chaleth Pyngrope stated in the FIR.
