SHILLONG: The Opposition UDP has demanded a CBI inquiry into the attack at Umling check gate at Ri-Bhoi District by a mob of coal truckers on Sunday.
“We demand a CBI inquiry into this incident to bring to light all discrepancies that had prevailed, which led to the unwanted incident, provoked by unjust measures adopted by personnel managing the gate. The government departments responsible for this mess need to fix responsibility and appropriate action needs to be meted out for any lapse of duty,” UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said in a statement issued here on Monday.
Dkhar said that the party will take up this matter with the government at the highest level.
He also said that the party strongly condemns the unprofessional management of the check gate which had caused traffic jams and this has seriously affected the commuters who frequent the Shillong-Guwahati highway.
“We have been informed that many people had missed their flights, appointments and those who were critically ill were stuck in the traffic jam along the highway which is totally unacceptable,” he said.
UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh decried the State government for not paying any heed to the irregularities and for not taking appropriate action which could have prevented the unfortunate incident on Sunday.
The party also expressed shock at the death of Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, officer in charge of Patharkhmah Police Outpost, who died under mysterious circumstances on January 24.
The party extended its condolences to the bereaved family and also supported the demand for a just and independent inquiry to bring all conjectures to end.
