SHILLONG: In order to sensitise people on the importance of the National Population Register (NPR) and capture of Biometrics, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner would convene a meeting with all the NGOs and members of prominent organizations next week.
The meeting will be held on February 11 at the State Central Library here at 11:00 AM.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that all NGOs, members of socio-cultural and religious organizations and others will be consulted in the meeting.
“We would like to know from the people their view of the problems in the implementation of the scheme,” Goyal said.
The implementation of the NPR was put on hold in the State after opposition from pressure groups who fear that “doubtful residents” will get themselves enrolled in the scheme.
The pressure groups have been objecting to implementation of the NPR demanding amendment of certain provisions of it as the state shares borders with Bangladesh and Assam and there are possibilities that people from outside might manage to register themselves and get permanent Indian citizenship.
