TURA: Several dozen under trial prisoners and inmates of the Williamnagar district jail have reportedly revolted over poor basic conditions inside the prison premises on Friday prompting officials to rush in and rectify the problem.
As per reports available from official sources, the prisoners raised a banner of revolt against the administration of the district jail following poor food and hygiene inside the complex.
Many of the inmates allegedly complained about the poor condition of the meals provided by the jail administration in which stale, and at times allegedly rotten, vegetables were provided for their meals.
On Friday the inmates reportedly refused to have their daily meal citing poor hygiene and launched a hunger strike prompting a nervous administration to rush in officers to look into the issue.
When contacted by The Shillong Times the jail superintendent feigned ignorance about the incident citing his absence on account of a government approved leave. The district magistrate in charge of jail, S R Marak, when contacted claimed that everything was under control and it was a minor issue which has since been settled. “There was a minor issue raised by the inmates. That has now been solved,” claimed the magistrate.
