NEW DELHI: The Centre has taken a serious note of the sporadic racial attacks on people from North East and will soon come up with stringent laws to deal with offenders.
This was informed to the lone Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya, Wansuk Syiem in a letter from the Home Ministry.
Syiem had raised the matter on the floor of the House through special mention and wanted to know what the Government planned to prevent such occurrences and punish the guilty.
The Centre has asked all state Governments and Union Territories to set up help lines and special NE cells to deal with the cases of racial attacks, be it verbal or physical, the Ministry said in the communication. It is also taking steps on the recommendations of the Bezbaruah Committee, it said.
The Ministry also informed that it is considering a proposal made by the high-level committee that looked into the racial attacks on people from North East in Delhi and other parts of the country.
A bill may be brought for amending the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013 for safety and security of the people of the Northeast in Delhi and others parts of the country and the punishment might include jail up to five years.
Wansuk had expressed her anguish over continued violent attack on people from North East living in the national capital region.
She had also demanded for special law to deal with such racial attacks.
