Manipur, Canada officials discuss economic ties

Imphal : Manipur government officials and a team of Canada officials led by first Secretary of Economic affairs of Canadian High Commission David Hamilton discussed various issues related to economic ties and development. The team which arrived in Imphal on Monday will spend about a week in the state and interact with wide range of people and officials. They will conduct detailed research on the economic and trade issues which can be taken up between Canada and Manipur. As Manipur is the gateway to South East Asia and with the central government strongly pursuing Look East policy, the Canada government has shown keen interest in involving in the trade and other allied activities, state government official said. The team is likely to call on Chief Minister O Ibobi singh, visit the border town, Moreh to see the trade activities.(UNI)

Bru outfit man arrested

Aizawl: A member of Bru Democratic Front of Mizoram (BDFM), who was allegedly involved in the abduction of two employees of Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) earlier this month, was arrested by Mizoram police and remanded to judicial custody, police said on Tuesday. Lianmawia (45), resident of Naisingpara relief camp in North Tripura district, was arrested at Tongsnampara in North Tripura district, around 12 kilometres from the Bangladesh border, yesterday in connection with the February 2 kidnapping. BDFM members had allegedly abducted a large number of people, both Mizos and non-tribals from Mamit district on Mizoram-Tripura-Bangladesh border since 2011. (PTI)

Situation in Nagaland’s Tuensang area under control

Kohima: The situation in Tuensang town remained tense and under curfew today after prohibitory orders were relaxed for a few hours on February 21 and 22. However, there were no fresh report of violence following the February 16 killing of a boy, official sources said. They said the situation was quiet, but an air of uncertainty prevailed. Security personnel were maintaining round-the-clock vigil in the district and Tuensang town in particular. They said five companies of the Nagaland Armed Police (Indian Reserve Battalion) had been deployed in the district headquarters. At least ten companies of the NAP (IRB) were deployed in the district at present in addition to the Assam Rifles. Sources said the district administration was strictly enforcing Section 144 of the CrPC. Last Saturday curfew was relaxed for three hours from 1000 hrs till 1300 hrs, allowing the public to get essentials and for another three hours on Sunday. As the district administration’s effort to impound personal licensed weapons continued, sources said at least ten people were arrested for possessing illegal firearms during the past week. They further informed that a third person had been arrested in connection with the February 16 mob violence when the school student was shot dead. (UNI)

Naga students’ body wants strict inquiry on disabled fund scam

Kohima: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has called for an investigation into the ‘misappropriation’ of Rs 12,79,50,000 crores by officials School Education Department. In an official statement NSF president Tongpang Ozukum and education secretary Bangdi Chawang condemned the Department of School Education (DoSE), particularly those officials involved in the scam, for ‘committing’ the act. The money was meant for disabled children. They urged the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the scam, or else the entire government functionary ‘will be more encouraged and determined’ to play with the career of innocent students. It assured the SIT that the students’ community is willing to extend every possible support. (UNI)
