SHILLONG: The state unit of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue of deprivation of rights of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the State.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on Tuesday, the LJP said that Meghalaya was issuing OBC certificates till 2006. Thereafter, without any notification, the issue of OBC certificates to the non indigenous people was discontinued.
LJP further said that the matter was taken up with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Cabinet Ministers Roshan Warjri and Deborah Marak, but in vain.
Earlier, there was a communication from the State Social Welfare department to the Research Officer, National Commission for Backward Classes that there was no specific community recognized as belonging to OBC in Meghalaya, hence the state government said there was no notified state list of OBC.
In this context, the party urged the Prime Minister to direct the State Government to restore reservation to OBCs.
