TURA: Four youths, including two teenagers, have been arrested by North Garo Hills Police on Thursday for a string of extortion cases carried out in the name of the banned GNLA. The extortionist swindled large sums of money from innocent victims including government employees and businessmen.
Disguised as petty traders, a police team went to Rari village to hand over the extortion money demanded by the gang and nabbed two members of the group. On their lead, two other members of the group were picked up from their respective homes in the same district.
The arrested gang members have been identified as Lugun R Sangma (31) of Chipakram village in Mendipathar, Silbath Momin (17) of Boro Gokul village in Rari, Sengman Marak (17) of Kitmadamgre village in Rari, and Daweng Marak (23) also of Kitmadamgre.
The modus operandi of the gang was to call up potential victims in the name of the GNLA and demand anything between Rs 5 to Rs 30 lakh.
The leader of the group, who called himself the commander of the GNLA, would either send text message or call his victim and order him to bring the extortion money to a remote area of the district.
