Muslim Liberation Army cadre nabbed in Assam

Guwahati:A cadre of Muslim Liberation Army (MLA) has been apprehended by the police in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Wednesday, police said today. Acting on specific information, the police nabbed the cadre from Srirampur area under Gossaigaon police station last night, BTAD Inspector General of Police L R Bishnoi said on Wednesday.  The militant has been identifed as Hafizur Islam and a 7.65 mm pistol and two rounds of ammunition have been recovered from his possession. The outfit is an anti-Bodo organisation and has been allegedly involved in the killing of Bodo Peoples’ Front supporters, he said.  Islam was allegedly involved in the killing of two BPF supporters during the last parliamentary polls and there was intelligence input that the group was planning more such attacks in the run-up to the forthcoming Bodoland Teritorial Council polls, Bishnoi added. Nagaland man arrested with arms

Diphu:A person, hailing from Nagaland, was arrested and arms and ammunition recovered from his possession in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday, a senior police officer said. The CRPF and police nabbed the person from Nowghat area under Bokajan subdivision of the district and recovered a .22 pistol with four rounds of ammunition and a 7.65 pistol from his possession, the officer said. The person, identified as Lukuto, hailed from Hotovi village under Kuhubita police station in Nagaland. (PTI)

Assam Guv greets people on Holi

Guwahati:Assam Governor P B Acharya today greeted the people of the state on the occasion of Holi festival. “Let the festival strengthen the secular fabric of the nation and foster unity, fraternity, joy, reciprocity and togetherness among the people,” the Governor said in a statement. The Governor also urged all to spare a thought on the occasion of this festival of colours towards the preservation and promotion of Assam’s wonderful flora and fauna and to prevent their destruction. He asked the people to welcome the advent of spring in a colourful way as it “Heralds our New Year to be celebrated next month”. (PTI)

Rhino killed in Kaziranga

Kaziranga: An adult rhino was on Wednesday killed and its horn removed by poachers in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park. The is a second incident of rhino killing within a week. The carcass of the male rhino was found by patrolling forest guards from near Bahubil camp in Burapahar range of the Park, forest officials said. Combing operations have been intensified in the Park to apprehend the poachers who managed to escape with the horn. This is the seventh rhino falling prey to poachers this year in Kaziranga after the killing of a rhino with its horn sliced off in the Kaziranga National Park (Northern Range) last Friday. The frequent killing of rhinos in the famous Park has led to widespread condemnation with state Governor P B Acharya expressing dismay over the issue and even asked the Forest minister to quit which triggered a controversy. The Governor had issued a statement and also expressed concern several times over rhino poaching, warning that strict action will be taken to protect the rhino. The Governor triggered a controversy after he asked the forest minister to step down if rhino poaching cannot be stopped. (PTI)
