One killed, 8 injured in clash between CPI, TMC activists
Midnapore (WB): One person was killed and eight others were injured in a clash between Trinamool Congress and CPI activists in West Midnapore district. A clash broke out between the activists of the two rival political parties over digging of a pond at Budra village near Kharagpur town last night, police said on Thursday. Prabodh Patar (53), who was injured in the clash, succumbed to injuries in the Midnapore Medical College Hospital while eight others injured in the clash have been admitted to the hospital, they added. In another incident, the CPI(M) party office at Kotbazar in Midnapore town was set on fire last night, police said. The CPI(M) alleged that miscreants supported by the TMC set their party office on fire. The TMC denied the CPI(M) allegations. (PTI)
Wild tusker tramples six to death
Sitamarhi:A rampaging wild elephant has trampled six persons to death in two districts of Bihar and seriously injured four others on Thursday. Four persons were killed in Sitamarhi district, while two were crushed by the pachyderm in Madhubani district. Among the injured, three are from Sitamarhi, while one is from Madhubani. Expressing grief and deep concern over the incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased, and Rs 1 lakh each to the four injured. The compensation will be given from the CM Relief Fund. “The district magistrates of Sitamarhi and Madhubani have been directed to pay the money without any delay to the kin of the six people who lost their lives. They have also been asked to arrange all facilities for the treatment of the injured,” Kumar said. (PTI)
Nine more die of swine flu in Rajashtan, toll mounts to 295
Jaipur:Nine more deaths due to swine flu were reported in Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, taking the toll due to the H1N1 virus to 295 in the state. As many as 5,822 people have been tested positive for the swine flu from January 1 to March 4 out of total sample collection of 15,986, according to a report by the medical and health department issued on Thursday. As per the report, 295 persons have died across the state with maximum 55 deaths occurring in the state capital. An official of medical and health department said that the task force headed by Dr Ashok Panagaria held a meeting at Swasthya Bhawan here last evening and reviewed the situation. The task force, set up by the state government, has also directed authorities to remain vigilant and continue to create awareness among the people, he said. (PTI)
Teacher arrested for obscene remarks in girl’s notebook
Rupnagar: A 50-year-old government school teacher was arrested for allegedly writing obscene remarks in the notebook of a 12-year-old girl student here, police said on Thursday. The accused, Daljit Singh, a teacher in the government senior secondary school in Kartarpur of Rupnagar district, wrote obscene comments in the girl’s notebook on Wednesday, they said. The girl’s parents yesterday filed a complaint with the regarding the remarks, they said. The locals thrashed the teacher yesterday and locked him up in a class room till the police arrived, they said. According to the locals, the teacher had earlier written similar remarks in the notebook of another girl student, but later he apologized for his conduct, they said. The accused has been sent to judicial custody by a local court yesterday and booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012. Meanwhile, District Education Officer Dharam Singh said he had written to higher authorities to take disciplinary action against the accused teacher, police said. (PTI)
Student injured in acid attack
Gurdaspur:A student was injured when two unidentified assailants allegedly threw acid on her, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred, when she was going back home after appearing for her examination, they said, adding that the two youths who had covered their faces threw acid on her. “The girl has sustained 60 per cent burn injuries on her face when these assailants threw acid on her, a few meters away from her home,” police said. The victim has been admitted at a private medical centre in Amritsar. The cause of the crime is yet to be ascertained. However, teams have been constituted to nab the accused, they said. Meanwhile, Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema has ordered Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Trikha and SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor to arrest the accused as early as possible and take stringent action against them.(PTI)
8-year-old Dalit raped in UP
Barabanki:An eight-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a minor in a village in Safdarganj police station area here, police said on Thursday. The victim, a third grade student, was yesterday lured by the accused, identified RPT identified as Ranjit, and raped her after taking her outside the village, they said. The girl was found in an unconscious condition and was later admitted to a hospital and is stated critical, they said. A case has been registered, they said, adding the accused has been arrested and investigation is underway. (PTI)
