Kohima:Nagaland, Assam and Tripura Gover-nor P. B. Acharya has con-demned the incident at Dimapur on 24th February, wherein one Naga girl was allegedly raped by one non local and said that violence is not the answer for any problem.
In a release on Thursday Acharya has requested all sections of the society to maintain peace and har-mony. Although the crime is in the nature of heinous, he has appealed let the law enforcing agencies take necessary action against the culprits and book them as per the law. He asked the law enforcing agencies to take necessary action to punish the culprits. Acharya also condemned the killing of a minor boy at the dis-puted border area at Urium-ghat in Golaghat district of Assam, the release added.
The Deputy Commiss-ioner, who is also the District Magistrate of Dimapur Wezope Kenye has promu-lgated indefinite curfew like prohibitory order under Section 144Cr.P.C. in entire Dimapur area with effect from 7 PM of Wednesday till further orders.
In the order, Kenye said it was evident that the situa-tion in and around Dimapur district was critical with destruction of properties and movement of large number of public, resulting in law and order problems, prohibitory orders have been issued. The order prohibits assembly of five or more than five person and all business establishments and schools are closed. Kenye said that the curfew has been relaxed from 7 AM to 11 AM Thursday for the peaceful rally organized by Naga Students Federation (NSF) and Western Sumi Hoho (WSH).
Meanwhile, in view of the situation, where the busi-ness establishment have been targeted, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) has asked all business establishments to down their shutters till emergency meeting sche-duled on Thursday aftern-oon at DCCI office. Schools in and around Dimapur have been advised to shutdown in view of the proposed rally and prevailing tension. For those schools holding examinations today, they were reportedly advised to postpone the same.
Earlier on Wednesday, students in hundreds from various educational insti-tutions came out sponta-neously and marched throu-gh Dimapur town in protest of the alleged rape of a college girl by a suspected Illegal Bangladeshi Immi-grant youth on the inter-vening nights of February 23. The protesters marched to the premises of DC Office demanding that the rape accused, be awarded capital punishment.
The protest led to a sudden closure of business establishments, as students traversed through the town shouting slogans that justice for the rape be done and that ‘Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants be flushed out of Dimapur.
The students reached the premises of the DC’s Office at around 1:00 PM, where the DC Wezope Kenye accompanied by SP Dimapur and other officials. A 9-member delegation of the protesting students, accompanied by members of Survival Nagaland, Naga Students’ Federation, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur and others, held a meeting inside the DC’s conference hall, with the district admini-stration and police officials.
In the evening youth numbering more than 100, some of them with their school uniforms reached New Market around 6 PM and destroyed the shops. The mob while destroying the shops in the New Mar-ket area, police reinforce-ment came at around 8:30 PM and lathi charged the youth to disperse. (UNI)
