Kolkata: The 24th state conference of the CPI(M) began here on Monday with an aim to revamp the party organisation and bring in new faces ahead of next year’s assembly election in West Bengal.
CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat after hoisting the party flag stressed the need to stren-gthen the party organisa-tion in the state to defeat Trinamool Congress and BJP in West Bengal.
Karat also underlined the need for unifying secular, democratic and progressive forces to fight what he said the “communal agenda” of BJP-RSS combine and the “neo-liberal policies” of the BJP.
The conference also assumes significance in view of next month’s elect-ion to Kolkata muni-cipal corporation.
CPI(M), the senior partner of left front, which had ruled Bengal for 34 years upto 2011, is holding its party conference at a time when the party has not only failed to gain its lost ground from ruling Trina-mool Congress but has also been losing opposition space to BJP.
The ongoing party conference saw change of guard in CPI(M) leadership in several districts of the state including Burdwan and West Midnapore with several party veterans han-ding over the leadership to younger generation.
In the conference, the CPI(M) leadership would also dwell on its tactical line for next three years. (PTI)
