SHILLONG: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has termed as ‘a total lie’ the recent statement made by Home Minister Roshan Warjri in the Assembly that Sengbath Marak, son of Oragitok Nokma, was in the company of two of the outfit’s leaders before he was killed.
The outfit questioned how a responsible minister of the state could go ahead and make the statement even before inquiry on the incident was completed.
“This is immaturity from a home minister to have given such an explanation. It may be recalled that recently she had stepped down as a home minister citing her incapability in handling the ongoing situation in Garo Hills. It is crystal clear that the statements are well versed originating from none other than the chief minister himself. The home minister is simply his mouthpiece,” GNLA publicity secretary Garo Mandei Ch Marak claimed in a statement.
Garo Mandei asked if the home minister could prove that GNLA members Baichung Momin and Jarek Momin were really taking shelter in late Sengbath’s residence and questioned that if the information was known to the police, why it was that Sengbath was not arrested but was killed in cold blood.  He said that the blind statement by the home minister in the Assembly after the cold blooded murder of Sengbath had brought disgrace to Meghalaya Police, and added that it was sad that the minister had justified the killing.
“The police intel is obscure as Baichung and Jarek were not in command in any range/ area and they were already in the general camp since January 2014 itself. This is the way police assert their intel to be perfect and work out to murder innocent people,” he said.
“This government has totally failed the people in terms of administration and security. Are there no senior intellectuals in the present government to assist the chief minister and home minister so that the state can get some respite from murders and killings? Talking about development is not enough; people’s lives are more precious than good roads and bridges. We request Salseng Marak and D.D. Lapang to remind the chief minister to have his homework done properly before laying foundation stones hurriedly,” he added.
