Garo Hills shutdown against police ‘high-handedness’

TURA: A late night incident on Friday in which police personnel allegedly vandalized the office of a Garo organization — Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has led to an outcry by student and social groups of the region who have announced a dawn-to-dusk all Garo Hills bandh on Tuesday demanding action against the guilty police personnel. The president of ADE, Dalseng Bira Ch Momin told newsmen that police personnel in commando uniforms forced their way into the office at Araimile locality of Tura at 10:30 PM and vandalized it. They also assaulted a member of the organization who was present in the premises and took him into custody.
“The injured member was released at midnight,” said Dalseng Bira Ch Momin.
The reason for the late night entry into the office without a legal warrant from a magistrate remains unknown.
Meawhile, West Garo Hills police superintendent Mukesh Kr Singh while speaking to The Shillong Times said that he has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
“The additional SP has been asked to probe the incident and by tomorrow we will get to know the events and identify the police personnel,” said the police chief.
