Rikil Chyrmang has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He carried out his research work under the guidance of Dr. S. Irudaya Rajan (Professor) and Dr. K. Narayanan Nair (Professor & former Director), Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. Rikil is the son of Ion Dkhar and Ersi Chyrmang, residents of Jalaphet, East Jaintia Hills District.

The Shillong Times first appeared as a tabloid weekly on 10th August 1945 under the editorship of Late Sudhindra Bhusan Chaudhuri. In 1958 it was converted to a Daily. Owing to financial constraints, within six months it reverted back to a weekly.
