Houses, crops damaged in South West Garo Hills, North Garo Hills

SHILLONG: Over a hundred villages in South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills have been affected by cyclone that hit the region on Saturday night.
Strong winds accompanied by rains bearing hailstones damaged houses and some crops in the two districts.
Initial reports claimed that around twenty villages under Betasing C&RD Block, including New Chondonpara, Chondon Nokat, Godalgre and Arenggre, were fully damaged.
However, after actual assessment of the ground situation, Betasing BDO Albert Marak informed that 139 villages were partially damaged and that total number of affected households was 247. Most of these households had their rooftops blown away by the strong winds, he said.

Meanwhile, Zikzak BDO Reuben Ch. Momin reported that Salmanpara, Dinapara, Nachilpara, Banangpara and Chapahati villages were partially damaged by the cyclone. The extent of damages and affected villages may increase after detailed survey, he added.
Meanwhile, in North Garo Hills rain and hailstones accompanied by cyclonic winds damaged houses in Upper Babukona, Kharkutta and Adokgre areas.
Deputy Commissioner W. Khyllep and local legislator C.W. Momin visited the affected areas to assist the affected residents.
